Ladera Ranch Master Planned Community Stormwater System

County of Orange

Hall & Foreman was among a consortium of engineers involved in the design and construction of the innovative storm water system that serves the master planned community of Ladera Ranch. For this project, the owner established goals that included open space preservation, thoughtful land management, responsible development, and community service.  The result was an integrated flood control and water quality system to support the development of approximately 8,000 homes, several shopping centers, an urban activities center, three elementary schools, a middle school, and numerous parks and recreational areas.

Central to the design is a comprehensive runoff management plan that brings together a 2.4 mile long riparian stream, two water quality basins, a storm water detention facility, and a covered regional flood control channel.  This system captures 90% of the dry weather runoff and first flush storm flows.  It also prevents peak runoff rates from exceeding pre-development levels.  The system provides functional open space for community use including scenic trails and educational opportunities for students in the local schools.
